New York zittert vor einem brutalen Frauenmörder. Elf Opfer hat der Killer bereits auf dem Gewissen, doch die Polizei ist weit entfernt von einer heißen Spur. Für Polizeipräsident Frank Starkey bleibt nur ein Ausweg. Widerwillig bitter er seinen Bruder Nick um Hilfe, einen Ex-Polizisten, der wegen unorthodoxer Ermittlungsmethoden vom Dienst suspendiert wurde. Mit einer Mischung aus genialer Intuition und technischem Sachverstand macht sich Nick daran, das komplizierte System hinter der Mordserie zu entschlüsseln. Dabei holt ihn immer wieder die Vergangenheit ein – in Gestalt seiner früheren Freundin Christine, die inzwischen mit Frank verheiratet ist. (Verleiher-Text)

For half the film, they keep Kline’s detective’s special abilities under wraps (we only know he can get a woman to bed on the first date), and then it’s finally revealed that he’s a New York Monk who approaches problems through prime numbers, the starry sky, and a firefighter’s nature (while everyone is running outside, he goes inside). Genre-wise and in terms of character, it’s oddly unmoored and definitely not a pure comedy. The way the investigation is conducted is more so amusing, and the capture of the culprit borders on farce. However, as one-time entertainment with a strong cast, it serves its purpose well. Among the characters, Aiello stands out as the typically loudmouthed police chief, who defied two clichés: he wasn't black, and despite his frequent state of resignation, he wasn’t actually loudmouthed. P.S.: What would the 80s be without music in the closing credits that unmistakably screams the 80s?
