Welcome to Idlewild, Georgia. Welcome to Church. Players gather nightly at the Church, with childhood friends--who grew up on opposite sides of the tracks--Rooster and Percival playing two key roles at the club. Set against the backdrop of this 1930s southern speakeasy, "Idlewild" is story of the loves and ambitions of these two struggling performers, told through intricate musical numbers and vibrantly choreographed dance sequences. Percival is the club's shy piano player and Rooster is the club's showy lead performer and manager. Together, they try to stave off gangsters who want to get their hooks into the place. Die OutKast hätten auf ein Jukebox-Musical verzichten und ein paar ordentliche Musikclips drehen, mit ihrem letzten Album "Idlewild" auf Tournee gehen sollen, und alle wären zufrieden gewesen. So wird die Erinnerung an dieses außergewöhnliche Duo etwas bitter, da sie ihre Namen unter das größte schwarze Klischee gesetzt haben, das man sich vorstellen kann. Kleinstadt, Prohibition und der Weg zum Glück, gesäumt von kurvenreichen, farbigen Damen, für die sich selbst Joe Baker nicht hätte schämen müssen. Die ahistorische Musik in dieser vorgetäuschten Runderneuerung ergibt nicht den geringsten Sinn, ebenso wenig wie der Glaube, dass André 3000 und Big Boi wissen, worauf es beim Schauspielen ankommt. Vielleicht hätte der sprechende Hahn auf dem Flachmann ihnen einen Rat geben sollen.

I love Outkast and their music... before "Idlewild." That album just never grew on me. They have much better stuff, and I have to say I would probably like a movie based on "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below" more. "Idlewild" still has good music, but it's just not as memorable anymore, it's different. The same goes for the film, with many interesting elements, but overall, this mafia drama is overcooked and unfortunately lengthy.
