2084. Nach einem apokalyptischen Weltkrieg gibt es nur noch zwei bewohnbare Gebiete auf der Erde. Douglas Quaid wohnt in der verarmten Kolonie in Australien. Regelmäßig wird er als Arbeiter in die reiche Region der United Federation of Britain gebracht. Um dem tristen Alltag zu entgehen, lässt er sich bei der Firma REKALL Erinnerungen eines Agentenlebens einpflanzen. Fortan wird er erbittert von Schergen des skrupellosen Herrschers Cohaagen gejagt.
