Eine Menge an gut geleisteter Arbeit beim Schnitt, den Schauspielleistungen, der Ausstattung sowie der Stilisierung der damaligen Zeit. Bestimmt ein unterhaltsamer und schwungvollerer Film als Lincoln. Er konnte sich nur mehr darauf konzentrieren, was den Zuschauer*innen attraktiv erscheint. Hoovers Bemühung um die Umsetzung der bahnbrechenden Idee, Fingerabdrücke zu sammeln (die interessanteste Linie der Geschichte), wird nicht zu Ende geführt. Seine physische Beziehung zu der Schauspielerin, deren Darstellung bei der Erklärung seiner komplizierten Sexualität helfen konnte, fehlt ganz und gar. Dabei handelt die zweite Hälfte des Films mehr von seinen innerlichen Dämonen sowie von der Intimität. Sie ist genauso interessant wie die erste, kriminelle Hälfte. Auf jeden Fall ist es ein beachtliches Denkmal einer kontroversen Persönlichkeit mit einem unbestreitbaren Bildungswert. (04.10.2013)

Eastwoods J. Edgar erinnert mich in vielen Aspekten an Spielbergs Lincoln. Es geht nicht nur um die bis zur Perfektion ausgefeilte Regie, sondern auch um die Kamera, ihre verblassten Farben und die Düsterheit (jeder Strahl des scharfen Tageslichts ist unerwartet und wirkt irgendwie unangemessen)… Große Ähnlichkeiten sehe ich aber auch bei der Art und Weise, wie die Geschichte des Haupthelden erzählt wird. Naja, Helden… Dass es mit Hoover nicht einfach gewesen ist, wissen wahrscheinlich alle. Es hat mich aber trotzdem überrascht, wie viel Eastwood aus seinen kontroversen Lebenskapiteln gezeigt hat, ohne Hoover in irgendeiner Weise zu entschuldigen oder als einen Heiligen darzustellen. Es handelt sich um einen dokumentaristisch geprägten Spielfilm – so wie ich es mag. Die Fiktion, die Hoover selbst erfunden hat, wird mit bekannten Fakten so geschickt kombiniert, dass man nicht merkt, was was ist. Es bleibt dem Publikum überlassen, sich in dem dramatischen, aber gleichzeitig sensiblen und sarkastischen Spektakel zu orientieren. An den Schauspieler*innen habe ich nichts zu bemängeln. Leonardo DiCaprio wirkt auch als Rentner unter den Latexschichten glaubhaft. Die Arbeit von Armie Hammers Maskenbilder sieht nicht so realistisch aus. Trotzdem: Hut ab! (02.03.2013)

An unpleasant disappointment that Clint had in store for me. I refuse to accuse him of any old-age senility, but even his firm personal style is mired in a dramaturgically-muddled film that only knows what it wants when it touches on a more historically significant event with which Hoover was associated. The rest of the film - though I wasn't expecting some cheap tabloid controversy where he wants to look under the FBI director's skin - is languid and dull, like the old-man mask that underlines the deadness of the actors' performances, and is the perfect repellent to the audience's empathy. God knows why it's as much of a fail for me as Scorsese's Shutter Island was. (16.02.2012)

After a long time, a film where Leonardo’s performance was pretty unconvincing. His J. Edgar Hoover is an unlikeable, arrogant, single-minded prick and closeted homosexual, but all those characteristics felt like a package with the real, lovely DiCaprio hiding inside it the whole time. In The Iron Lady, Meryl Streep really transforms into Margaret Thatcher, but Leo isn’t able to do that under Eastwood’s direction. Otherwise, it’s way too long, told in a not very interesting way (yeah, in the end, the old Hoover proves to be a not very reliable narrator, which illustrates his personality, but until then it’s just boring) and with emotions that never work out. For most of it, instead of paying attention to the film itself, I pondered the question of whether the older (with make up) versions of the protagonists looked like a bloated person who stuck their head in a beehive or more like a horrifying mutant product of crossing human and alien DNA. I was unable to find a straightforward answer. (14.02.2012)

J.Edgar is a good piece that revels in the authenticity of all spectators. Leonardo DiCaprio, on the other hand, is at the peak of the current acting elite, because he portrayed John Edgar so perfectly that for a moment you will wonder if Leo is just pretending or if the FBI founder acted that way in reality. However, the biggest problem with this movie is the fact that it is a quite specific choice for a movie night. It is difficult to watch and you need to pay attention to every scene in order to understand the subsequent development. However, this can be quite challenging in some respects, because the film can sometimes be very boring. And most importantly, J. Edgar Hoover is a character that definitely won't appeal to everyone. His determination sometimes turns him into a good monster and you need to be prepared for that. The film, however, doesn't try to please everyone and that is admirable. Clint Eastwood did a great job with the most precise portrayal of the FBI's origin and the biographical storytelling of the man behind the scenes, in my opinion. Interestingly, I was quite surprised that a Czech living in America was involved in the selection of locations for this film. So let him keep up the good work there. (09.04.2012)
