Senator Ransom Stoddard kommt nach Shinbone, um an der Beerdigung von Tom Doniphon teilzunehmen, erzählt vom Tod des Banditen Liberty Valance. Stoddard war Anwalt und stellte sich Valance zum aussichtslosen Duell und tötet ihn. In Wirklichkeit wurde Valance hinterrücks von Doniphon erschossen. Die Männer hatten sich in Kellnerin Hallie verliebt. Doniphon brennt die Farm, die für sie gedacht war, nieder, als er sie an Stoddard verloren hat. Stoddard reist zurück in den Osten. (ORF)
