Das 'Grand Budapest Hotel' hat schon strahlendere Zeiten erlebt. 1968 erzählt Zero Moustafa einem jungen Schriftsteller, wie das einst prächtige Anwesen in seinen Besitz gekommen ist. Vor über 30 Jahren hat er als Lobby-Boy bei dem mit allen Parfumwässerchen gewaschenen Hotelportier Mr. Gustave gearbeitet. Als dieser nach dem Tod der wohlhabenden Madame D. aus Dank für glückliche Stunden mit einem wertvollen Gemälde bedacht wird, eröffnet deren Sohn Dmitri eine folgenschwere Jagd auf Mr. Gustave. (ORF)

By the second half, I was getting a little bored with Anderson's playfulness and quirkiness, and the whole thing had an annoyingly repetitive feel to it. I also felt at times that the presence of the huge cast of first-rate actors was self-indulgent, as the arrival of some new characters didn't really advance the plot one bit. But overall, of course, it's still entertaining, especially the sex-crazed hotelier with gerontophilic tendencies, played by Ralph Fiennes, is absolutely divine in some passages ("I go to bed with all my friends."). But I can't shake the feeling that this is still "just" slapstick, with eccentric characters and an interestingly garish aesthetic. Something was simply missing this time. But 3 stars is still not enough, so for me it's kind of a weak 4 stars.
