Als er seiner Freundin Loretta Lassiter (Renée Zellweger) verspricht, ihren Sohn Mike (Gabriel Basso) vor dem Gefängnis zu bewahren, nimmt Strafverteidiger Richard Ramsay (Keanu Reeves), entgegen seiner Überzeugung, einen sehr persönlichen Fall an. Mike wird beschuldigt, seinen Vater Boone (Jim Belushi) ermordet zu haben. Er hat die Tat sogar gestanden, spricht aber mittlerweile kein Wort mehr – auch nicht mit seinem Anwalt. Doch während des Verfahrens kommen neue Details über Boone ans Licht und es stellt sich schnell heraus, dass fast alle Zeugen etwas zu verheimlichen haben. Das nutzt Ramsay aus, um einen Freispruch für seinen Klienten zu erwirken, denn darum allein geht es ihm. Unterdessen stellt seine Assistentin Janelle (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) weitere Nachforschungen an und erhebt einen ungeheuren Verdacht. (EuroVideo Media)

Despite the fact that the entire film takes place in a courtroom, I’ve gotta say, Keanu Reeves plays a damn good lawyer. Plus, having a solid voice actor for the dub made me like him even more. Add to that all the things people say about him on social media, and it’s hard not to buy into the fact that he’s just an all-around great guy. He really elevates what’s otherwise a pretty average courtroom drama and gives it a whole new energy.

At the beginning, it seemed quite promising that it could be a fairly good intricate courtroom case, but the more it unfolded, the more it seemed to me that it was poorly handled in terms of the screenplay. Keanu reprises his role from The Devil's Advocate, complete with the vomiting, there's a final twist, and after half an hour, you may realize that it really is Renée Zellweger here.
