Varan - Das Monster aus der Urzeit

Ishirô Honda demonstrated with another of his films how much the Japanese tried to capitalize on the immense popularity of kaiju films. Instead of focusing on the story, Toho Studios churned out one similar film after another, where the only variations were slightly different characters and slightly different monsters. Varan the Unbelievable is a prime example of how the effort to make a lot of money overshadowed giving the audience something extra. Honda repeats himself extensively, though it's undeniable that the films remain excellent in terms of special effects. (16.03.2014)
