Assassination Nation

Ernst kann man das hier wahrlich nicht nehmen. Sam Levinson scheint in zwei Richtungen zu gehen - in der ersten Hälfte präsentiert er uns ein leicht gesellschaftskritisches Drama, das aus dem Ruder läuft, und in der zweiten Hälfte versucht er, ein oberflächliches Teenager-Grindhouse-Massaker auf die Bildfläche zu bringen, das mit einer sehr gut inszenierten Hausszene beginnt, aber dann in unlogischen Motivationen der Charaktere und der Unfähigkeit, das Ganze mutig, kompromisslos und vor allem sinnvoll zu beenden, ertrinkt, sodass wir zum Schluss nur ein eher sicheres und nichtssagendes Ende bekommen. In dieser Hinsicht versagt die Struktur des Films etwas. Darüber hinaus untergräbt sich das Ganze selbst durch das unausgewogene Streben nach sozialer Satire auf der einen Seite und dem Anlocken des Publikums mit direkter Brutalität auf der anderen Seite. Trotzdem neige ich aufgrund einiger zu dieser Zeit mutig geäußerter Gedanken in der ersten Hälfte und der Tatsache, dass es mich an einem späten Abend während der Erschöpfung von anderen Festival-Filmen gut unterhalten hat, zu einer Bewertung von über 50%. Erwarten Sie keinen Actionthriller, es handelt sich vielmehr um eine soziale Satire über Privatsphäre im Internet und das Leben amerikanischer Teenagerinnen in sozialen Netzwerken, die sich gerne als scharfzüngig und beißend darstellen würde, aber genauso oberflächlich ist wie die Fotos von Models auf Instagram, die sich vor dem Spiegel posieren. Durch die Geschichte von fünf Oberschülerinnen, die Opfer von Online-Hackern werden, die sich in Online-Speicher hacken und private Daten der Benutzer öffentlich machen, wirft der Film einen Spiegel auf Amerika und den dekadenten Lebensstil seiner heranwachsenden Jugend, unterstützt und verteidigt ihn jedoch, anstatt ihn zu kritisieren. Obwohl der Film in den letzten fünfzehn Minuten mit einer modernen Hexenjagd (deshalb spielt die Handlung in Salem, Zwinker, Zwinker) seinen Höhepunkt erreicht und endlich etwas Action bietet, muss man sich zuvor durch über eine Stunde langen Dialogexposition quälen, in der die 18-jährigen Protagonistinnen wiederholt als unsympathische, eingebildete Zicken mit dem Modegeschmack von Luxusprostituierten dargestellt werden, die alles und jeden wegschicken, aber weinen und beleidigt sind, wenn ihnen jemand dasselbe antut. Die Tragödie besteht dann darin, dass der Film vergeblich versucht, den Zuschauer dazu zu bringen, ihnen die Daumen zu drücken. Erwähnenswert sind die an einigen Stellen recht einfallsreiche Regie und Kamera, ein paar gut inszenierte Szenen (der Überfall auf das Familienhaus in einer Einstellung) und die treffende Kritik an Heuchlern, die andere Menschen ohne Kenntnis des Kontextes und ohne Argumente verurteilen, obwohl sie selbst etwas zu verbergen haben. Eine postmoderne flache Unterhaltung, die visuell den letzten Teilen von "The Purge" entspricht und vor allem von denen geschätzt wird, die sich mit ihren Heldinnen identifizieren können. A postmodern, feminist, politically incorrect, social-media and, most importantly, disturbing thriller that offers a little bit of everything and mixes multiple genres at once, including the excellent home invasion, revenge and grindhouse. Definitely not a film for everyone, but I enjoyed every second of it. The very idea of private details and photos being leaked onto the internet is disturbing in itself and when it happens to half the city suddenly there is uncompromising anarchy and chaos. The acting is first class, audiovisually the film is impressive and rightly far-fetched. There are executions, kidnappings, nudity, eroticism, suicide, humiliation and killing. I don't think I've ever seen a more intense teen massacre. Interesting line from the film: “When i grow up, I wanna be a director and only make male rape revenge films. Like Deliverance? Ew no. That's gross. I want it to be sexy. Like, if someone remade Straw Dogs, but instead of Susan George getting raped, Dustin Hoffman gets raped.” 80%. (09.12.2018)

Sample manifestation of almost everything that pisses me off in today's world. The film tries to be some kind of brutal satire, but fails miserably in many respects, instead of scathing criticism, it rather defends what it seemingly tries to criticize - at least for everything related to the main heroines, it feels that way. Assassination Nation is as crazy and silly thing as the whole The Purge series - at some moments it even felt like I was watching a story from the same universe. The film promises an action-packed politically incorrect thriller with a twist - but it is politically and ideologically clearly anchored and definable. It is also worth mentioning that the same topic with almost the same plot was already processed by South Park in its 20th season and it must be noted that it did it much better and smarter - and without annoying insta idiots, stereotypical pig-like cops, awkward talks, and many other absurdities. Oh, and I would also like to warn you not to jump into the bait of brutal and violent ride - surprisingly, the film has a rather slow pace and the first hour is practically one long exposition scene for the events in the second half, which, however, does not offer any uncompromising satisfaction, but rather only confirms the inconsistency, shallowness, and scriptwriting helplessness of everything that happened in the film. Purge: Assassination Nation is pompous and silly postmodern crap for today's teenagers, who may see themselves in it as in a mirror and pat themselves on the back, how accurate it is, while at the same time confirming that it's okay. It's appealing to watch writer-director Sam Levinson's dogged effort not to celebrate, judge, or tolerantly ignore the depicted vision of contemporary high school youth. Though almost everyone and everywhere is tethered to electronic devices, they are also capable of discussion, their own attitudes, and an awareness of the big picture, and while the film suffers from a certain thesis that becomes increasingly unbearable towards the end, at least it doesn't come across as anachronistically preachy to everyone involved from the position of a sensible senior who knows there’s more to life than this. Besides, almost all the adults here are ultimately the enemy. The resulting high-school revolution recalls the youthful rebellion characteristic of Japanese movies like Battle Royale or Shion Sono's films, and in fact directly acknowledges the homage to Japanese culture. But the whole show fails miserably in the last act, when it is no longer able to restrain its need to provide bitingly relevant allegory on the US and it starts throwing American flags and cheeky monologues around the set, which should have taken a back seat to the advancement of the plot, but instead proceeds by having four girls shoot at a car until it blows up. The existence of films like The Nightmare or Spring Breakers unfortunately doesn't help it much either. (19.02.2019)

I'm giving the film two stars for the momentary excitement that I felt thanks to a great portrayal of fake morality and exactly the kind of hypocrisy which makes America what it is. Apart from that, I didn’t find much else to appreciate. The script was painfully dumb for the most part, and even unpleasantly boring at times. (07.05.2019)
