War correspondent Witek is away most of the time, and Anka must endure the horrors of war from home. The testimonies Witek passes on to the world feed Anka’s solitude and the catastrophic visions that fill her uneasy mind. And, as it transpires, the border between reality and fantasy is extremely fragile. In her directorial debut actress Ewa Bukowska based her work on the autobiographical novel by Grażyna Jagielska, in the process adeptly avoiding the pitfalls of slavish film adaptations. The non-linear story, the visual quality of the image, and the character acting of Magdalena Popławska render 53 Wars an evocative psychological drama about experiencing war second-hand: we don’t have to be there for it to have a destructive influence on our lives. Very impressive portrayal of post-traumatic stress disorder. The main protagonist of the film gradually sinks deeper into depression and anxiety, which constantly escalate and have no end. Her husband - a war correspondent - is to blame for everything, as he constantly travels from war to war and disregards the fact that his wife's personality is collapsing because of it. Anna's biggest problem lies in the fact that she truly loves her husband completely and the constant fear that he is in places where he could lose his life at any moment consumes her fully and pulls her into endless darkness, where she is unable to function normally and the journey to a psychiatric hospital is inevitable. Everything culminates in the fact that the best solution for her would be if her husband truly perished and she tried to move on from it, rather than continue to drown in what ifs. The film has a very friendly running time and is definitely a very interesting topic, with its handling being at a high level - but it is so difficult and specific that I had a little trouble digesting it all. But it is definitely worth seeing - if only for the impressive performance of Magdalena Poplawska.
