Hungary, 15th century. The poet Guthy Gáspár is called back from Bologne by his family. The Italian monk, Filippo accompanies him. Back home Gáspár learns that his family wants to make him a king. He is received by his elder brother, for his father died and his mother became mute. Soon he learns several versions of the death of his father and that his mother may not be his real mother. Someone is killed in front of his eyes, yet he comes to life again and intrigues. Both the archbishop and the false monk confuse everything. Finally his father appears in a Turkish gown - everything which happened was just a trial and Gáspár was found unfit. The father kills his own son. The suddenly appearing Venetian, however, kills the father, following the order of the Sultan. But all this was merely a play, Filippo and his companions depart from the castle playing and joking. Shots bring them down from behind. Now the man in the monk's gown appears, and even he is killed by a bullet. (Verleiher-Text)
