In Hollywood ist Drehbuchautor Joe Gillis wenig erfolgreich und stets knapp bei Kasse. Beim Versuch, sein Auto vor der Pfändung zu retten, landet er auf einem alten Anwesen am Sunset Boulevard, wo die längst vergessene Stummfilmdiva Norma Desmond residiert. Sie kann einen Filmautor gut gebrauchen, plant sie doch schon lange ein glanzvolles Comeback.
